“COLORFUL COCKROACHES,” said Kevin O’Leary aka ‘Mr. Wonderful’ from ABC’s Shark Tank. I sat on my living room couch, appalled! How could this grown man be so rude to these young, black female entrepreneurs?!! I thought, “That could be me up there!” What do you do? Get mad, angry, yell? NO!! YOU PREVAIL!! And that’s exactly what The Lip Bar founder, Melissa Butler, did and why her company continues to inspire and encourage young entrepreneurs around the world. The Lip Bar “A company that would introduce women of all shades to experience a lip color that was not only bold in its shade, but also healthy in its intake.” The Shark Tank’s rejection made them bigger than ever!
“We went to Shark Tank basically knowing that we wouldn’t get an investment, because if you watch their show they basically only invest in stay-at-home moms or tech companies, but you have to remember that Shark Tank is like reality TV right now, so it’s literally the most exposure that you can get as a brand. And so we went on there for marketing.” Melissa Butler via XONecole.com
GREAT marketing tactic indeed! I checked out their website and social media pages right after watching their pitch. I was TRULY inspired. The Lip Bar has been featured in Ebony, Essence, Cosmopolitan, and caters to the twenty-something year old’s individuality. Its mission is to “challenge the current standard of beauty by creating a lipstick experience that is unsurpassed in craftsmanship, quality and color.” The lipsticks are handcrafted with natural ingredients like vitamins A & E, shea butter, jojoba and avocado oil while moisturizing, softening and amplifying lips, in bold colors. The Lip Bar is now a $400,000 brand. How could Shark Tank ever turn them down?
